About Relocating to Mauritius

Relocating to Mauritius is a free, independent guide to moving to the island: residence permits, tax, costs, areas, schools and the practical first weeks. It is written for people coming from South Africa, the UK and further afield, and every guide is built from official sources, listed at the foot of each page.

Who we are

Rory Phillips founded the site and runs it. He also publishes Relocating to South Africa, a guide site built the same way as this one.

We research these guides from the official sources rather than from life on the island. That is why every guide lists its sources and the date we checked them: you can see exactly where each rule comes from, and check our reading against it.

How the guides are made

  • Official sources first. Permits come from the Economic Development Board and the Passport and Immigration Office, tax from the Mauritius Revenue Authority, and the rules themselves from the Acts passed by the National Assembly. Where we rely on anything else, such as an accounting firm’s tax summary, the guide says so.
  • Dated, not timeless. Every guide ends with “Sources, checked” and a date, so you know how fresh the facts are.
  • Disagreements shown, not smoothed over. Government web pages in Mauritius are not always updated when the law changes. Where a page and the current Act disagree, we follow the Act and say so. If we cannot confirm a figure, we leave it out rather than guess.
  • The answer first. Each guide opens with the short answer, then the detail behind it.
  • Rechecked after every Budget. Mauritius announces most changes to residence and tax rules in its Budget each June, then writes them into law in the Finance Act that follows. We recheck the guides each time and move the checked date on.

What we are not

We are not a relocation agency, an immigration consultancy, a property developer or an estate agent. We do not handle permit applications or sell property. No developer, agent, bank or school pays to be named in a guide, and there are no affiliate links.

What we will not do

  • Tell you which permit is right for you. The visa checker narrows the options, but the choice turns on details only you and a qualified adviser can weigh.
  • Recommend a financial product, a bank or any other provider.
  • Publish a figure we have not checked against an official source, or present an old figure as current.

Corrections

Rules in Mauritius change often, and now and then we will be behind. If you spot something wrong or out of date, email hello@relocatingtomauritius.com with the page and, if you can, the official source. We check every report, and when a guide changes, its checked date changes with it.

Frequently asked questions

Who writes the guides on Relocating to Mauritius?

Rory Phillips, who founded the site, writes and edits every guide. Each one is researched from official sources, lists them at the foot of the page with the date they were checked, and is rechecked when the rules it covers change.

How often are the guides updated?

Every guide shows the date its sources were last checked. Mauritius changes many residence and tax rules in its Budget each June, so we recheck the guides after every Budget and whenever we learn of a change. Check the official source before you rely on a figure.

Is this an official government website?

No. Relocating to Mauritius is an independent guide. For applications and official answers, use the Economic Development Board, the Passport and Immigration Office and the Mauritius Revenue Authority, which the guides link to.

Can you help with my permit application?

No. We are not an immigration consultancy or a relocation agency, and we do not handle applications. The guides explain how each route works, so you can go to the Economic Development Board or a qualified adviser with the right questions.
